I'm A Winner!

Well ... perhaps, I am not a winner. But I have won something. There is a distinction between the two.

I mentioned TangognaT's Manga Giveaway a few days back, and just found out I was one of the Super-Secret-Fantastic-Surprise-Ultra-Bonus-Manga Giveaway winners. I'll be receiving volume 1 of Musashi #9 and a Viz sneak peaks book. I'm very excited ... it's a title I've never heard of, and exploring the unknown is great fun. Thanks, TangognaT!

In other "Mark Reads Manga" news, which may be interesting to me and me alone, I picked up Fruits Basket Volume 1 while at 2005 Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award Winning Night Flight Comics for my weekly trip. Although I know Fruits Basket is a sales powerhouse, I can't say the description of the series really sold me - nor did the cover.

Tohru Honda was an orphan when one day fate kicked her out of the house and on to land belonging to the mysterious Sohma family. After stumbling upon the teenage squatter, the Sohmas invite Tohru to stay in their house in exchange for cooking and cleaning. Everything goes well until she discovers the Sohma family's secret, when hugged by members of the opposite sex, they turn into their Chinese Zodiac animal!

However, this week's "Flipped" really sold me on it. I'm not crazy about "Seven volumes in, I know better" ... but it definitely sounds worth a try. Coming into manga as an outsider, distinctions like shojo and shonen mean little to me. If it's good, I'm interested.

That said, though: Adorable four year olds and hugging animals ... what on earth have I become?

Reading a bit on Mushashi #9, it looks like exactly the kind of title would would ave thought would be my entryway. I'm definitely looking forward to reading it. Though now I've sampled so many series, it's time to start following up on them. :)

The book is in the mail, so you should be getting it early next week, I hope.
