This Week's Shopping List: July 27, 2005

It's odd to troll the 'net reading about 52 and the Morrison/Lee WildC.A.T.S., then head to the comic shop to buy what's on the rack. I get excited about projects that are far in the future, when there's plenty of good stuff right now. I'll be heading out to the 2005 Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award Winning Night Flight Comics Wednesday, and there's a lot to look forward to.

It's a close contest for my most anticipated book this week, but the idea of Ellis on the JLA really sounds like a blast, and JLA Classified #10 kicks off his six-issue "New Maps Of Hell" arc. I'm not a big fan of Wizard, but they have me by the fanboy shorthairs with a five-page preview of Infinite Crisis. That very Crisis keeps building steam, with the Superman/Wonder Woman "Sacrifice" arc wrapping up this week, and though it's been much maligned, I have enjoyed it and can't wait to see where it goes. Any week that has a new Astro City is a good week, and the Wildstorm imprint sees even more of my money with Silent Dragon, by Diggle and Yu. I wasn't interested in Godland, as it seems a bit to heavy on the homage, but this edition of "The Basement Tapes" changed my mind. A little bird told me to keep an eye out for Flash and Firestorm (though Firestorm doesn't show on the shipping lists), so they've been duly added. Last, but certainly not least, I'll try again for Hellboy, which was expected but did not show last week.

Did you get the Wizard 167? My store didn't have it. Is the Infinite Crisis preview any good?

I did pick up Wizard, and the Crisis Preview is solid. It does set up things, and drop some interesting hints about the series. But I don't know that 5 pages (two of which is a splash) is worth the $5.99 if that's all you're buying it for, though.
